MITOLOGY

I am going to speak about leisure activities for children because I have a son of 7 years old and nowadays most of my free time is to enjoy with him and I must say that I really like it. There are more activities to do with this age than before because children are more interested and conscious of their reality.
There are lots of activities to do with children during all the year but in particular at Chritmas, Easter and Summer holidays are more range of activities that are offered in Sport Centers, museums, thematic parks, libraries...
For example, we usually go every Christmas to Izenaduba basoa park or the house of Olentzero and some mythological characters. It´s the first mythological park of Basque Country and Landetxo goikoa is the oldest farmhouse of Bizkaia (XVI).
In this park children can learn about Basque mitology, nature and old customs with the help of interactive games and technology. There are also guided visits to see the inside of Landetxo goikoa. Olentzero´s friends Mari Domingi eta two birds called Kuku eta Pintzoi are going to tell as come stories.
There are more activities outside. It´s possible to visit:
  • The “jentils” games (they were very wise and strong Basques that lived in the mountain and know how to make bread, iron tools before villagers)
  • Tartalo´s magic tree (He was a evil cyclops. He had a ring that guided him and told him if there was somebody near)
  • The cave of Mari of Anboto (the most important character of Basque mitology. She helps human beings)
  • The labyrinth of Basajaun (the lord of the woods. He looks after animals and helps nature lovers)
  • The dragon or Herensugea (Basque people dominated the last one and nowadays it helps the person to go out from the brush and cliffs)
  • The billy goat or akerra (The word akelarre means the filds of the goat. The witches met around the akerra. The legend says the withches kisses his backside to have good luck)
  • The bonfires (Fire was very important for our ancestors. They got light and heat . Coal was also very important. They called it the black gold.
  • Sugar (He was half man and half snike. When he met with Mari they caused storms)
  • Fairies with duck´s feet (They lived next to caves or  streem and they liked to comb/brush their long hairs with gold combs)
  • To finish the visit with a 3D simulation film of Mari Teiletako ladybug  (the Basque Ratoncito PĂ©rez).
And the most important, Olentzero is going to give as a warm welcome. Children and parents also, can ask him their wishes and babies give him their dummies.
Another typical option at Christmas is to visit the Christmas Children park in the Bilbao exhibition Center. They offer a large range of games, sports, traditional workship and barracks and if you want to skate in the Casilla´s Sport Center there is a ice-skate rink.

We also go to Belen´s exhibitons and to the parade of Olentzero and The Three Wise Men
Last Christmas in the Alhondiga´s atrium met different Christmas Characters from over the world with Olentzero. The tree wise men, Santa Claus, Ded Moroz (Russian grandad), San  Nicolas (German bishop), Befana witch (Italy), El Apalpador (Galician coal merchant) and Dun Chen Lao Ren (a Chinesse old man).
